Trip Overview
This itinerary moves from Monteverde to La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio and ends back in San José. The route flows logically with no backtracking, making it easy to follow even for first-time visitors.
Days 1 and 2 are in Monteverde, Days 3 and 4 in La Fortuna and Arenal, Days 5 and 6 in Manuel Antonio, and Day 7 in San José before your flight.
The dry season runs from December to April and is the most popular time to visit. The rainy season runs from May to November with short afternoon showers, but both seasons work well.
Shared shuttles connect all stops for around $25 to $55 per leg. Budget travelers can manage $80 to $100 per day, while mid-range travelers should expect $150 to $200 per day.
Trip Highlights
- Days 1 to 2: Monteverde Cloud Forest. Walk hanging bridges, spot sloths and birds, and go on a guided night tour. Pack a light jacket since it gets cool up here.
- Days 3 to 4: La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano. Hike near the volcano, soak in thermal hot springs, and visit La Fortuna Waterfall. This is the most active stretch of the trip.
- Days 5 to 6: Manuel Antonio. Walk wildlife trails in the national park, watch capuchin monkeys, and relax on calm Pacific beaches.
- Day 7: San José. A slow morning with local coffee, a market visit, and easy airport access before you fly home.
