Planning a 7-day trip to Germany can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? What do you skip?

We have designed this itinerary after planning dozens of Germany trips for first-time and repeat travelers. We know which routes work, which cities deserve time, and which stops are worth every minute.

This guide covers Munich, Neuschwanstein Castle, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Rhine Valley, and Frankfurt in one logical route.

No fluff, no guesswork. Just a day-by-day plan so you can stop overthinking and start packing. Germany rewards those who plan smart.

Trip Overview

This 7-day Germany trip follows a southwest-to-central route covering Munich, Neuschwanstein Castle, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Rhine Valley, and Frankfurt.

The full trip runs for 7 days and 6 nights, giving you enough time to see the best of this region without feeling rushed.

April to October is the best time to visit, as the weather stays pleasant and most attractions are fully open. If you are planning around late September, you will also catch Oktoberfest in Munich, which is an experience on its own.

For getting around, Germany’s rail network run by Deutsche Bahn is reliable, affordable, and connects most major stops on this route.

Trip Highlights

  • Days 1 to 2: Munich city life, culture, and food. Walk through Marienplatz, visit Nymphenburg Palace, sit in a beer garden at Englischer Garten, and watch the Glockenspiel chime at 11 AM.
  • Day 3: Neuschwanstein Castle day trip from Munich. Book tickets in advance, cross the Marienbrücke for the best view, and visit Hohenschwangau Castle right next door.
  • Day 4: Rothenburg ob der Tauber slows the pace right down. Walk the medieval town wall, visit St. Jakob's Church, and stay the night after the day crowds leave.
  • Day 5: A scenic drive through the Rhine Valley with a stop in Rüdesheim. Try the local Riesling wine on Drosselgasse lane and take in the first castle views along the river.
  • Day 6: Rhine River cruise from Rüdesheim toward Koblenz. Pass Loreley Rock, Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, and Marksburg Castle before heading into Frankfurt for the night.
  • Day 7: A relaxed morning in Frankfurt's Sachsenhausen district with apple wine and a walk along the Römerberg before your airport transfer home.
