I planned a 10-day Scotland trip once, and let me tell you, the route planning alone took weeks. So many castles, so many scenic roads, and zero idea where to start.
That’s exactly why I put this itinerary together.
This guide covers Edinburgh, Inverness, the Isle of Skye, and Glasgow. You get the best scenic drives, the most iconic castles, and real cultural stops, all laid out day by day.
No guesswork. No wasted days. Just a solid plan that makes your 10 days in Scotland count.
Trip Overview
This 10-day route is split across four main spots. You start in Edinburgh, where you spend 2 to 3 nights soaking in the history, castles, and culture. Then you head north to the Scottish Highlands and Inverness for 2 nights of wide open landscapes.
After that, it’s 2 nights on the Isle of Skye for dramatic coastal scenery. You wrap things up in Glasgow with 1 to 2 nights of art, music, and city life.
The best time to go is May through September. The weather is decent and the days are long. If you want fewer crowds, April and October work well too. Just avoid deep winter unless you’re okay with short, cold, grey days.
For getting around, renting a car is the best call, especially in the Highlands. Public transport won’t cut it once you’re outside the cities. That said, trains do connect Edinburgh and Glasgow, so you have options for those legs.
Trip Highlights
- There are a few moments on this trip that will genuinely stick with you. Edinburgh Castle sits right in the middle of the city and it is as impressive up close as it looks in photos. Glencoe is a drive you will not forget. The valley is wide, moody, and feels like nothing else in Scotland. Loch Ness is a must-stop. Whether or not you spot the monster, the scenery around it is worth every minute. The Isle of Skye is on another level completely. The landscapes there look almost unreal. And if you do one walk on this trip, make it the Quiraing. It is dramatic, raw, and one of the best things Scotland has to offer.
