South India pulled me in long before I could put it into words. Standing inside the Meenakshi Amman Temple with incense in the air and pilgrims moving quietly around me, I realized no photograph could prepare you for this.
We have designed this itinerary after planning dozens of South India trips for first-time and repeat travelers.
Planning across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka felt overwhelming at first, but once I broke it down, everything clicked into place.
We have put together a 10-day plan that covers the temples, hill stations, backwaters, and beaches without leaving you exhausted by the end.
South India Trip Overview
South India is where ancient civilizations built cities that still breathe.
The food changes every 100 kilometers, the architecture shifts from towering Dravidian gopurams to colonial shorelines, and the landscape moves from dry plains to misty peaks to quiet coastal lagoons.
The route this itinerary follows is Tamil Nadu, then Kerala, then Karnataka. This sequence makes sense because it moves from heritage and temples into nature and relaxation, and finally into the grand palaces of the south. You ease in through culture and wind down through comfort.
The best time to plan your visit is between October and March, when the weather stays pleasant and the monsoon has cleared out.
Travel between cities works well on overnight trains, private cabs for scenic stretches, and short domestic flights when time is short.
