I spent weeks planning my Sri Lanka trip, and honestly, figuring out the right route alone took forever.
Where do you even start? There are beaches in the south, wildlife in the national parks, misty mountains in the hill country, and ancient temples scattered across the island. That is a lot to fit into 10 days.
But it is totally doable with the right plan.
This itinerary covers everything you need. The best places to stay, how to get around, and what to see each day. No guesswork. Just a clear, simple route that works.
Trip Overview
This 10-day itinerary covers the best of Sri Lanka without feeling rushed. The route flows naturally from one region to the next, so you are not wasting time backtracking.
You start with one night in Colombo to arrive, settle in, and get a feel for the city. Then two nights in Sigiriya for the Cultural Triangle, which is full of ancient rock fortresses, cave temples, and historic ruins.
Next up is two nights in Kandy, a slower hill city known for its deep cultural roots and the famous Temple of the Tooth. From there, one night in Nuwara Eliya puts you right in the middle of Sri Lanka’s tea country, with cool air and green estates all around.
Two nights in Ella come after that. It is one of the most loved stops on this route, with easy hikes and great views at every turn. The trip wraps up with two nights in Mirissa for beaches, fresh seafood, and a proper wind-down.
For timing, December to April is ideal for the south and west coast. If you are leaning toward the east coast, May to September is the better window.
Trip Highlights
- Climbing Sigiriya Rock Fortress is steep but the views from the top make it worth every step. The train ride from Kandy to Ella is next, and it is honestly one of the most scenic rail routes in the world.
- In Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth is a must-visit. It is one of Sri Lanka's most sacred sites and the atmosphere there is truly something else.
- Nuwara Eliya lets you walk through real tea estates and see how the country's famous tea is made. And Mirissa Beach wraps the whole trip up perfectly with warm water, soft sand, and zero plans.
