We have designed this itinerary after planning dozens of Greece trips for first-time and repeat travelers.
I still remember standing at the base of the Acropolis for the first time, looking up at columns that have survived thousands of years, and thinking, “I should have come here sooner.”
Greece does that to you. Between the ancient ruins, the blue-domed churches, and the warm Aegean waters, it stays with you long after you leave.
But planning a Greece trip can feel overwhelming, especially when you are trying to pick the right islands and connect everything smoothly.
Greece Trip Overview
Greece gives you everything at once: thousands of years of history sitting right next to whitewashed villages, crystal-clear water, and some of the best food you will ever eat.
For first-time travelers, the ideal route is Athens, then Santorini, then Mykonos. It flows naturally, the transfers are manageable, and you get a full picture of what Greece is really about.
The best time to visit is May to June or September to October, when the weather is warm, the crowds are thinner, and prices are more reasonable.
For getting between islands, ferries are scenic and affordable while flights save time. For most travelers doing this route, a mix of both works well.
Trip Highlights
- Day 1: Stand at the top of the Acropolis of Athens and look out over a city that has been continuously inhabited for over 3,000 years. Few experiences compare to it.
- Day 2: Walk through the Parthenon up close, browse the Acropolis Museum, and lose an hour or two in the open-air Monastiraki market, where you can pick up everything from handmade ceramics to vintage finds.
- Day 3: Arrive in Santorini as the sun starts to lower, find a spot in Fira, and watch the sky turn orange and pink over the caldera. It is the kind of sunset that reminds you why you travel.
- Day 4: Spend the morning exploring the narrow lanes of Oia, taking in the blue-domed churches and cliffside views. In the afternoon, head to the beaches, where the volcanic sand comes in shades of red and black.
- Day 5: Arrive in Mykonos and spend your first evening walking through Little Venice, where the colorful buildings hang right over the water's edge.
- Day 6: Choose a beach, lay down a towel, and do very little. In the evening, see the famous windmills at golden hour and then follow the music into the night if you like.
- Day 7: A slow breakfast, a final look at the water, and then your transfer back home or to Athens for your international flight.
